In the REAL World, the Diff on a Steering Axle would NEVER be permanently LOCKED!!
Do you need Locked Diffs for a Rock Crawler? YES, of course!
* On a Trail Rig? NO WAY!! It causes undue stresses on the Axles, Bearings, limit Steering Radius, and speeds up front Tire wear - especially if you go Trailing a little faster than normal, or run on hard surfaces!
The FIRST thing Everyone seems to tell you is "LOCK THE DIFFS".
Give yourself a little more Challenge! Install a Gear Diff (front ONLY), but fill that Diff with some Thick Diff Lube. I mean THICK! - 500,000 to 1 MILLION Weight, cst!!
That will keep BOTH Front Wheels pulling, but one will always slow down just enough to improve Steering and increase Tire life!
